GAZEBO/UNITY ROOM
Origins are mysterious for the stone tower with
the iron spiral staircase that sits near Building 10,
although it was likely built at the same time
as the house in 1899. Such fanciful buildings
were popular with Victorian architects, and this
one likely functioned as a playhouse for the
five children of Edward L. “Ned” Doheny and
Lucy Smith Doheny when they lived there
between 1916 and 1928. In 2019, it was dedicated
by Campus Ministry as the Unity Room, an
ecumenical space inviting individual or group
prayer and meditation.
